If you get stuck on base when the National Anthem plays, you will hear the British first followed by the American one. The tune sounds familiar because you know it from the song, My Country, 'Tis of Thee.
It's usually played at sporting events, Remembrance Day ceremonies (or any other dealing with military occasions), and whenever the Queen makes an appearance.
Here are the words:
God save our gracious Queen!
Long live our noble Queen!
God save the Queen!
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us,
God save the Queen.
Thy choicest gifts in store
On her be pleased to pour,
Long may she reign.
May she defend our laws,
And give us ever cause,
To sing with heart and voice,
God save the Queen.
Here it is being played.
You should be doing this on-base in respect for the British National Anthem just as you would do your own- If in a vehicle during Reveille or Retreat, pull the car to the side of the road and stop. All occupants sit at attention until the last note of the music has played. When in civilian clothes and outdoors, stand at attention and place your right hand (with a hat if wearing one) over your heart. It is not disrespectful to your nation, but shows how you have common courtesy and is required by AIR FORCE INSTRUCTION 34-1201
I know what you are thinking, what happens when there is a King, they just simply change the words.
