The Bridge of Sighs

The Bridge of Sighs is part of St John's College in Cambridge. It was built in 1831 to connect New Court to Third Court. It was named after a bridge in Venice. It is said that Queen Victoria loved this more than anything else in Cambridge.

A myth associated with the bridge is it is called the Bridge of Sighs because students cross it before taking their exams as they cross from one side to another.

Two times students have pulled the prank of dangling a car under the bridge are:

• In 1963, a 1928 Austin 7 was punted down the river using four punts that had been lashed together - then hoisted up under the bridge using ropes. 
• In 1968, a Bond or Reliant Regal three-wheeler car was dangled under the bridge.
